Facebook is a great way to keep in touch with people and to re-connect with family and friends. When I first moved away from the US, there was no Facebook. I lost touch with so many people, even my brothers and sisters! Furthermore, there was no updating my status or uploading photos. Imagine all the wonderful photos ops and hints and tips I could have posted about my life in Prague or my Island hopping in Greece (actually, probably best NOT to have been able to record any of that!) or my life with my future husband in Tokyo. There are so many great places we went to and loved. Like the video shop around the corner from our old-style Japanese apartment, the tiny pizzaria at the end of our street, the hi-tech gym we belonged to and went to every morning before work (my, those were the days!) – none of these things were Facebooked or tweeted about. Now, everything we do and experience can be shared with our friends if we wish (and most times, we do). It is a way we can keep in touch and feel close with people we do not see on a regular basis.

Additionally, Facebook is a way we can connect with others who have a common interest or who are in a similar situation, like living abroad or parenting. Recently I joined a group on Facebook called American Expat women in the UK. It is a friendly inclusive group that members invite others to join. It has women who are living in the UK, women who have previously lived in the UK and also British women who live in the USA. It is a support group and a place people can vent about frustrations or problems. Equally, it is a place people can celebrate their experiences, share information and offer hints and tips about living in the UK. You never know when someone has been in a similar situation and who better to ask advcie from.

I’d like to thank the women behind this Facebook group, in particular, Deb Frewin, who is always there to reply to your post and to welcome new people. She is awesome and needs to be recognized for her hard work and her devotion to this group. I am sure it is a lifeline for many of the women in it. Thank you Deb!

And, if you are not on Facebook yet, please consider it as it can be a lonely world out there if you have moved to a new country or re-patriated after many years away.
