USA HERE WE COME
In a the early hours of tomorrow morning we’ll be heading out to London Heathrow airport with 3 kids, 5 suitcases, 5 carry-ons, 2 bags full of drinks and snacks, various stuffed animals and games consoles and our e-tickets to West Palm Beach Florida via Toronto with Air Canada. Right now I can’t see past trying to get everyone on the same flight safe and sound but once we do, maybe I’ll be able to switch to holiday mode! This is a tall task for me as I’ve been working around the clock for weeks to get projects wrapped up or at the stage where I can leave them – putting a busy design company on hold for a few weeks is stressful and nerve wracking. I know everyone deserves a holiday – especially to see family – but when it’s your own company at stake, going on holiday is very stressful.
Once I’m in Florida I hope to shed all work anxiety and enjoy seeing my parents and brothers and sisters. It will be a real homecoming! It’s been 6 years since we’ve been back to the USA. I haven’t been back since I wrote Bringing Up Brits and I’ll be interested to see what things I find ‘foreign’, what things I really miss, and what things my children find difficult or fall in love with. My husband loves visiting the States – he gets special treatment in stores and restaurants because of his charming British accent. This trip IS, in my son’s words, EPIC because we’ll not only be seeing my family, but we’re also going to Disneyworld. I haven’t been since I was a child and- no doubt it’s much bigger and better now! The kids are SO excited.
I must put a copy of Bringing Up Brits in my carry-on just in case someone asks about it and doesn’t have one. I suppose I could get it out and read it (to myself) in public and see if anyone asks about it. Americans are not shy about approaching strangers! Oh I am looking forward to being back home!
Stay tuned for some photos and one-liner blogs – if we’re lucky (says my 10 year old son) we’ll see some poisonous insects and unusual creatures (or maybe that’ll just be us!) and of course the madness of Disney…… USA Here We Come!

Wishing you and your family a fantastic holiday Meg. I know how precious those trips are to visit family. And Disney too – how exciting! Hope you saved room to bring some goodies back with you. I’ll be interested to hear about your reverse culture shock. I feel it every time I’m back. Familiar, yet a stranger to all the pop culture. The thing that shocked me last time was the portion sizes of food. I had forgot how big they were. And being stuck in Atlanta airport desperate to find any sign of a health food.
