American snacks and drinks
I have discovered that my oldest son shares my passion and craving for American snacks. The salty, savory kind that is pretty repulsive but Oh so tasty and very unhealthy! Sam has always been more of a savory over sweet type of boy in his preference for junk food and over the years I have noticed that out of all of my children, he’s the one I can connect with the most when it comes to American snack food. We both drool over corn chips, Cheetos and Chex mix. He loves to try new drinks – the next one on my list to order in is Tab. Obviously there’s some stuff you can get here like Pringles and Lay’s and Dr. Pepper and I think I’ve even seen Minute Maid. But so much you can’t get so I order in from either Ocado, American Soda or Skyco.
It’s funny because Sam and I both get excited about going to Spain for the same reason – we can get American snacks in Spain!! It may be a trivial thing and of course I know being American doesn’t necessarily mean loving American snack foods, but in some small way, it’s wonderful to be able to share this connection to my own childhood with him. Most of his childhood references will be British, of course they will, so sharing this is wonderful to me and for us. This doesn’t mean we sit around together and gorge ourselves on salty snacks and sugary drinks all day long! But it’s fun to scroll through these websites together adding things he wants to try and, for me, looking for things I haven’t had in so long.

Photo is from American Soda. I noticed they’ve changed the artwork for Cheetos and Fritos as well since I lived in the States. They say English crisps are the best and you can get any flavor imaginable. That doesn’t impress me. I guess sometimes you can take the girl out of America but you can’t take the American out of the girl!

Your post made me laugh! I get really excited when I see French food in supermarket! But they are usually quite expensive so don’t get them very often.
Yes, it can be expensive! But I just can’t resist. Perhaps you could treat yourself once in a while
Ahh, yes – I am becoming more used to the US snacks (I have a blog series called ‘Slice of Americana’ where I review them). It is certainly fun getting to try them and experience the difference between UK and US snack food! #MyExpatFamily
That sounds great, would love to see your view on some of my favs
Love this post Meghan!! Having lived in America for a couple of years myself I totally understand the American junk food cravings!!! There’s something about it (the savoury stuff and the drinks particularly) that is just unbeatable and the UK just doesn’t compare with it!!
I do now have a minute maid craving now though and that is one that is no way gonna be fulfilled here
Thanks for sharing with #myexpatfamily x
I’m sure I sound like the unhealthiest person and mother but I think sharing food from your home country is a great way of sharing your childhood and culture with your own children.
Ooh, I love crunchy cheetos. There’s an American food shop about 30-45 minutes away from me, but I am scared to go in case I go crazy. haha They also have an online shop (Stateside candy co). #myfamilyexpat
Oh yes I know Stateside Candy co. I get their emails but I’ve not yet ordered anything from them. Can’t believe you’re so near to it! You should go!!
Just discovered your blog and I’m really enjoying reading your posts! I’m a Brit living in America, so I find it very interesting seeing an American perspective of my home country, even though I haven’t lived there for a long time. Cheers!
Hi Pam, thanks for stopping by Bringing Up Brits! I also find it interesting seeing a British perspective of the USA. Just had a look at your blog! I went to high school in Knoxville, TN. Hope you’re having a great time. Let me know if you want to guest post on Bringing Up Brits sometime. I’d love to have you
Cheers Meg! We are absolutely loving Tennessee, even though it was never on our radar of places we’d like to live
It’s definitely very family friendly and outdoorsy here. Enjoy the rest of your week!
