Slurping Soup and P.E.T
Depending on where you live in the world, your kids might already be on summer vacation, or summer holiday as it’s called here in England. We still have four weeks until they break up and it always amazes me how little time they actually have off school. It’s only six weeks and by the time they have one week of just chilling out, one week of cleaning out and re-arranging their rooms and sorting out their clothes (getting rid of too small and buying new clothes), one week of summer clubs or activities, one or two weeks of actual family holiday in France or somewhere else, it’s time to start getting their uniforms, school shoes and pencil supplies all bought, labelled and ready to go back. And then before you know it, it’s all back to school. It is the British way!
Of course my kids don’t see it that way at all. For them, it’s 6 whole weeks of ‘freedom’. So what do you actually do with them? My good friend Heidi Walker, a life coach and Parent Effectiveness Training Instructor, has put together some summer reflection activities and a family summer plan which will help your family to have a fantastic summer. In our case, each member of our family has a wish list of what they’d like to do or acheive and this plan will help us in our thinking and planning. Please take a look, I really recommend these reflection activities.
Heidi has also put together a reading list called ‘Additional Resources That Will Support You in Your Parenting Journey’. There are some really great books and websites in this list which you might find very useful, not just for this summer, but at any stage in your life as a parent. One I am going to get is called Siblings Without Rivalry – this is a definite one for me and my husband! Heidi has also included a book called Slurping Soup and Other Confusions: Real life stories and activities to help third-culture kids during transition – brilliant for those families who are living abroad.
